Exporting vector icons for clean pixel display

Take this into account for crisp Display of vectors in web browsers: even SVGs are output in full pixels.
Icons that don't have even pixel sizes are attached to the top left border and lead to different sharpness and shifted symmetry. Back in the day, this happened with pixel fonts and some Flash player UIs.
So on preparing smaller icons – be it pixel based images or vector exports:
- use an invisible border with full pixel values around the icon
